William George Helms Jr.

M, b. 4 December 1951, d. 27 July 1993
  • Biography*: He WILLIAM GEORGE HELMS Jr.
Billy was born in Vancouver, Washington on Dec. 4th, 1951. By that time, his father had died in a car accident. His mother, Ethel Kaylor Helms, subsequently met and married William L. Baughman in 1954, and was raised as their son. Billy was the oldest of 5 children, followed by Marcia (Sissy), Barbara (Bunny), Jack, and Jamey Curt. He was athletic, enjoying tennis and track until his knee gave out on him. He briefly attended the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, before joining the Army and making it his career. During that time, he spent some years based in Germany. When he developed cancer, he was given a medical discharge and settled in Portland, Oregon. He pursued various interests there, taking classes as the inclination hit. He worked with stained glass and also spent a great deal of time working on his genealogy, storing it on his computer. Unfortunately, this was lost after he died of a heart attack. He died 27 July, 1993 at his home in Beaverton, Oregon.
Billy visited his family occasionally, both in Iceland and in the States. We sometimes talked on the phone for hours. For a long time after his death, things would happen that I looked forward to sharing with him until I remembered. I had a hard time dealing with his loss. I was unable to be at his funeral, and that made it hard to accept that he was really gone. But even though he is, he lives on in my memory and in those of others who knew and cared for him.
