Abbie Jane Toney

F, b. 15 July 1853, d. 29 July 1941
  • Note*: She The Toney family is related to the Todd Family, by marriage. A Miss Sally Todd married Grandmother Toney's brother, she must have been Mrs. Abraham Lincoln's sister. Jerry Todd, Mrs. Lincoln's brother, my father always spoke of as Uncle Jerry and he thought him a wonderfully intelligent man. (Abbie J. Garrison) in Toney surname file at YCHS/YCGS library.
  • Note: She Our Family Tree written by Abbie J. Garrison, Baker, Oregon.
    My Father
William Litton Toney was born at Smith's Landing on the Missouri River 9 miles Southwest of Fulton, County seat of Calloway County, January 31st, 1827. He came to Oregon in 1847 arrived at Vancouver the 20th of november. There were no US soliders in Oregon at that time; no one but Pioneer settlers and the Hudson Bay Company men, who were British subjects. My first work in Oregon was for the Hudson Bay Company that winter and received provisions as pay for my labor. In the Spring I went to Portland then to Yamhill County where I got a job of making rails for Jessie Henderson. The Summer of 1848 with my father and family and Owen P. Turner, my brother-in-law, we took up Donation Land Claims between Deer Creek and the South Yamhill River.
In April 1848, I enlisted in the Yamhill and Washington company to fight the Cayuse Indians. There were about 65 men in the Company. We were under Captain Burnett and went up the Columbia River to The Dalles and on to the Whitman Mission. In the Spring of 1849 I went with my father and others to the mines in Caliofrnia, came back the same year and moved on my Donation Land Claim. Was married on March 4th, 1851 to Elcey Ann Carlile in Oregon.
In 1858 moved to Portland, Oregon. Returned to Donation Land Claim 1859 and lived there until 1864 when they moved to California and returned to Claim in 1865. Moved to McMinnville in the same year and operated the McMinnville Hotel and a Stage Line to Portland.
William L. Toney's father was James Toney who was born in Indiana (which is incorrect because he was born in Virginia) in 1799. William L. Toney's mother, Patsy (Martha) Thornton was born in North Carolina in 1796. His paternal grandparents, Edmond Toney was born in South Carolina and was of English decent. Edmond Toney was the youngest son of 8 brothers and was to young to go into the Army. Six of his brothers fought in the Revolution under General Washington, while Edmond stayed at home to help the women work the farm.
William L. Toney's maternal grandparents, William Thornton, born in South Carolina of Irish descent, married Martha Owns, whose father came from Wales to South Carolina before the revolution. His paternal greatgrandparents came from England with the colony that settled Virginia. The wi/the mother of Edmond had all of her dishes, which were made of puter stolen by the Tories during the Revolutionary War. She was very much grieved and went out into the woods near by to mourn over her loss. While sitting on a log she heard an acorn fall on her large puter platter, which was covered with leaves and soon found it. The thieves had dropped it in their flight through the woods. This plate was given to her grandson, James, Toney, as a relic of the revolution, which he kept until the year 1839, when his home was destroyed by fire in Missouri. It was found after the fire by William L. Toney, who was 12 years old, melted into a large lump and was considered worthless and so was lost. One of the sons of these English pioneers was named James Toney, who fought in the Revolutionary War, remained in Virginia and when we last heard of him in the year 1860, he was a spry old man over 100 years old. Edmond Toney's family consisted of two boys and three girls. The boys names were James and William. The girls names are forgotten.
    His Maternal Grandparents
William Thornton, who married Martha Owns, was to young to go to war, but suffered great hardships by being a whig. The Tories caught him out and beat him with pine knots and left him for dead, but he revived and got home. William Litton Toney said he had seen the scars on his head when he got old. This grandparents, William Thornton, was not a farmer but was a mechanic. He worked for 21 years in the first iron works in the United States, located in Kentucky. Matthew Thornton, a brother and a physician in New Hampshire, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and was the great uncle of William Litton Toney. This Iron Works was called the Red River Iron Works. They beat the dross put of the iron with a big trip hammer run by water power. They made kettles and pots as stoves were not made at that time approximately the year of 1810.
Patsy Thornton had three sisters, Hannah Owns, who married Thorp, Polly married Willson; and Joice married Sullivan. Patsy being the oldest was about 16 during the Revolution and the men all in the Arm, she had to plow and plant crops so the family might have food. William and Patsy Thornton had three boys: William who married Sally Todd; John and James and four girls. one of the girls Patsy married James Toney in Indiana; Franky married Deshazer; Polly married William ShasteenChastain, a cousin of James Toney. The fourth one married a man by the name of Barnes. She was the mother of Captain James Barnes also another boy Daniel. James was Captain in the Rogue River Indian War in Southern Oregon.
William Litton Toney had two sisters and two brothers. Mazela Bellzara born in 1823 in Indiana; married Own Price Turner in Missouri and crossed the plains to Oregon in the year 1847. Malinda born March 1829 in Missouri; married Caleb Joshua Payne in Oregon; James born in Missouri 1834; married Sarah Metzger in Oregon; and Jonathan born September 1838, married Mary Booth in Oregon.
William Litton Toney married Elcey Carlisle, March 4th 1851 in Oregon. Their children Abbie Jane born July 15th 1853, married Lewis R. Garrison 21st of April 1871 in Oregon. Elsadie born 13th October 1855, married Ben Beaman in 1875 in Oregon. Emma Retta born February 9th 1859 in Portland Oregon, married Spencer Foster in 1880 in Oregon. William Marion born September 21st, 1865, married Martha Wallin. Herbert Lee born December 21st 1878, married Pearl Virginia Grover. Three boys died -- James Litton born 1862, died 1864. The twins Alva Luel and Loil Elby born November 1870. Loel Elby died in 1871 and Alva Luel died May 1877.
William Litton Toney's wife Elcey Ann Carlile was born July 7th 1837 near Toronto, Canada. Her father Peter Carlile was born in Maine in 1812. Her mother Nancy Newcome, born in Halifax, Novia Scotia in 1812. Married Peter Carlile about 1934 in Canada.
