Mitchell originally donated the land where the cemetery is located for a school]. Also see, Register of Deaths - 1873-1890, Sonoma County Recorder's Office. Mitchell died of "gravel"; shown as born in TN.) at Graton, Sonoma County, California.
  • Children*: He The names of the children were obtained from records of Emma (Street) Hivley. At the 1981 California Gilliam reunion, George Gilliam, of Santa Rosa, supplied a handwritten list of the birthdates of Mitchell, Henrietta, and all the children (no locations). The paper appeared to be very old and authentic and was to have been written by Emma (Williams) Orr. sister of wife of David Taylor Gilliam. This list includes Jasper Gilliam and Wright Decalb Gilliam who probably died young and do not appear on any census report. All birth dates that we could verify were accurate.
  • PHOTO*: He Pictures of Mitchell Gilliam and Henrietta (Taylor) Gilliam are in THE GRAND RIVER TRAIL: CLINTON AND DEKALB COUNTIES 1833-1979, by the DeKalb County Historical Society, Maysville, MO, 1979. p. 246. There is a picture of Mitchell Gilliam's log cabin in Sonoma County in the HISTORY OF SONOMA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, by Honoria Tuomey, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1926. p. 487. It has the notation under the picture "The first wedding of an American couple in Sonoma County occurred here." That would have been Mitchell's daughter, Mary Gilliam, and Isaac Sullivan. However, this being the first marrage of an American couple in Sonoma County is doubtful.
  • (Witness) Census: He appeared on the census of 1 June 1830 in the household of Epaphroditus Gilliam at Clay County, Missouri.
  • Milit-Beg*: Mitchell (NMI) Gilliam began military service on 18 July 1832 18 Jul 1832 - 18 Aug 1832, Crawford's Indept. Co., Mo., Mtd Vols.

Old Oregon-Mitchell and his brother, Cornelius, settled where the town of Dallas, Oregon, is now located. (OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY; Vol. 2, p. 152. Mitchell could not yet obtain title to this land. However, he sold the "improvements" on the property to John Lyle when Mitchell came to California in 1849. (See OHS QUARTERLY, pp. 135, 140.) A 28 May 1849 letter from Leander Belieu, nephew of Mitchell Gilliam, to Leander's wife pin points Mitchell's trip from Oregon to California.
Sonoma County, CA - Mitchell bought about 337 acres from Juan Bautista Cooper in 1850 but the transaction was not settled until 1857 when Cooper obtained clear title to his Rancho El Molino land grant. Mitchell settled on this land in 1850, signed an agreement to purchase the 337 acres for $507 in 1852, and the purchase was finalized 15 April 1857. (Sonoma County County recorder's office.) Mitchell also claimed land in the mountains above Armstrong Grove [Guerneville]. There is a Gilliam Creek wher this land was located. Both of these properties are shown on maps in Thompson's 1877 Historical Atlas of Sonoma County, CA. This atlas also shows that Mitchell Gilliam and Isaac Sullivan were among the first to commercially grow fruit in Sonoma County. on 6 January 1836 DeKalb County, Missouri.
