  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the STANLEY O. GILLIAM CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF
The biggest heart in America ceased to beat August 1, 2004 at 7:30 PM, surrounded by the love of his family and God. Stanley O. Gilliam was born in Pomeroy, Washington, on January 7, 1926, the son of Sheriff Ransom L. (Dick) Gilliam and Alice Cary (Oliver) Gilliam. He is survived by his bride of 56 years, Eunice (Barth) Gilliam, SISTERS Jeri (John) Waite and Mabel (Gene) Waldher, CHILDREN, Richard (Carolyn) Gilliam, Chris Nimick and Ann Sapel, GRANDCHILDREN Jared (Dani) Nimick, Jayme (Jeffrey) Nimick Coffey, Justin Nimick, Rick and Renne Gilliam, Jenifer (Adam) Knickerbocker and Tiffany Sapel, GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN Abbi Gilliam, Kye Ransom Nimick and Jayden Christine Coffey (due in September), 18 nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by beloved parents R.L. and Alice Gilliam, and brother Larry Gilliam. Stan nurtured a deep love of aviation all of his life. He graduated in 1948 from Western Air Service, certified by J.S. Sagmiller. He met his life-long bride at Thun Field in a wooden hangar while servicing a Valley Air Service plane. Stan proposed to Eunice very shortly after, while in flight in an open cockpit airplane, promising her that they would never be rich but life would never be dull. They were married 4 months later, and on their 25th, she jokingly asked if they could reverse the order and concentrate on a little less excitement. Stan started his employment with the Boeing Company in 1953. Tex Johnston, who performed the now-famous Boeing 707 barrel roll over Seafair, quickly picked Stan out of the flight line. During the bright and shining era of commercial air travel development he was certified as a flight engineer and started in flight-test development. From there he transferred to flight crew training, where he traveled the world training crews for such airlines as Ethiopian Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, El Al, All Nippon Airways, Avianca, Iran Air, and Japan Air Lines, and a host of others domestic and foreign. He also certified the flight engineers of Mohmar Khadafi’s personal jet and met people like the emperor Hali Salasi of Ethiopia, Moshe Dayan, and Mrs. General Yamamoto of the Royal Japanese Navy, who was the Gilliam family landlady in Tokyo, Japan in 1964. Upon his retirement he returned to his original aviation roots, operating out of Thun Field in a variety of capacities, serving the Airport Pilots’ Association, the executive board hosting the large public open houses at Thun in the mid 1980s, and the Pierce County Task Force for runway realignment. He was also instrumental in the design, construction and installation of the new wind T. He hangared his 1947 Stinson taildraggger at Thun, logging countless hours in the air, often with grandchildren in the right seat, and countless more at the Hangar Inn. From 1970-1984 he majored in Grandpa and collected grandbabies, happily receiving the births of all seven who never failed to delight him. He spent a major part of every day in their service, leaving them with a solid foundation of tried and true unconditional love and a clear example of how to be a man, how to walk in your own shoes, and the meaning of loyalty, then handing them all gently and proudly into adulthood. He and Eunice participated in many community and Christian outreach programs, earned recognition from Helping Hand House, and spent years transporting food baskets, quilts and other needed items from Lutheran World Relief and their church. He was a simple man who loved life, his family and friends, and always said he had the best job in the world. He is our loss, and Heaven’s gain. Public is invited to attended the following: VIEWING Thursday, August 5 at Powers Funeral Home. MEMORIAL SERVICE Saturday, August 7, 1:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Puyallup (reception to follow). BURIAL Monday, August 9, 1:00 p.m. at Woodbine Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Puyallup Food Bank Emergency Fund, or Immanuel Lutheran Church building fund.

Eunice Louise Barth

F, b. 27 June 1924, d. 12 December 2007
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Eunice L. Gilliam
Eunice L. Barth Gilliam Born June 27, 1924 in Puyallup, WA; went home to the Lord Dec. 12, 2007 in the loving company of family and friends, gently and, for her, so strangely silent. Bride of Stan Gilliam for 56 years, and preceded in death by him in 2004, also parents Louis and Louise Barth and a host of beloved family and friends. She is survived by 3 brothers, including Edward (Bud) Barth, Ray (Linda) Barth, Dr. Charles Barth (Barbara) and sister Maxine Palmer, a son, Richard (Carolyn) Gilliam, daughters Chris Nimick and Carol Ann (Patrick) Sullivan, 7 grandchildren: Jared (Dani) Nimick, Jayme (Jeff) Coffey. Justin (Laura) Nimick, Rick (Kara) Gilliam, Renne Gilliam, Jenifer (Adam) Knickerbocker, and Tiffany Sapel; also a large contingent of cousins, nephews, nieces, and all sorts of family, all of whom she dearly loved. She leaves behind a huge family of the heart in Immanuel Lutheran Church and the choir there, the quilting ladies, PHS Alumni Association, the Food Bank, Helping Hand House, St. Francis House, Gods Closet, Lutheran World Relief, and, it seems, at least half of the city of Puyallup. Eunice was born to pioneering and immigrant families of the Orting and Puyallup Valleys, and was very proud of her hard-working heritage. Her maternal grandfather, Charles Wuestney, was one of the vegetable farmers having a display at the Fair in 1900, its first year, and maternal great-grandparents were immigrants from Germany, coming to Orting through Lehui Kuaii as foresters and farmers. Eunice graduated PHS in 1942 during WWII, and began her first real job around 1943; she was a "number please" operator for Ma Bell in the downtown office, and in her 5 years there was promoted along to office supervisor until the office "went dial" and was moved to Tacoma. By 1948, she married Stanley O. Gilliam, and a different kind of adventure was in store for her. They moved many times, from Sacramento to North Pole, Alaska during the Korean War, where they bought a 24 x 24 log cabin with an indoor pump, but "outdoor plumbing." Regardless, they both loved it there, coming home to Puyallup Dec. 1953. They settled on the corner of 9th Ave. and 7th St. SW in 1958 (She always said, "it's the stucco house on the corner and we are the stuckees."), and from there ventured out for many adventures all over the world. Eunice traveled to Tokyo, Japan, London, Paris, Athens, and Lagos, Nigeria, among others in the capacity of Stan's job. Eunice always was happiest at home serving others, from boy scout leader to room Mom, she graduated to helping start the FISHEfood bank. She and Stan were honored with multiple awards for service for Helping Hand House, Lutheran World Relief. She was very active and instrumental of the formation of the PHS Alumni Association, and served as its first historian. She and friend Evonne Powers collected soap from the local hotels for many years, and she would clean each one, put it in a food dehydrator to sterilize it, then pack it up to send off to thirld-world countries through Lutheran world relief. She must have sanitized many thousands of pounds of soap for those who needed it. She and Stan made a home for grandchildren of all sorts at all times, starting with the Nimick children in the 70's, then in the mid-1980's having Rick and Renne there full-time for about three years, and Jen and Tiff next door for a decade. they were always ready, willing and able to help any way they could, and loved each and every one unconditionally. In the 2000's, Eunice was instrumental in the installation of the Veterans Memorial in Pioneer Park, and had a brick gifted to her from the Arts Association and installed there in appreciation of her work there. She was honored at the Puyallup High School 150th Anniversary Celebration as one of the 150 honorees, and when the MC Mike Egan said, "We are so glad you could be here, Eunice," she replied, "Well, I'm just glad to be anywhere." She was known for her straightforward and outspoken manner, and sometimes she stepped on people's toes, but she was likely to think that maybe those toes should have been pointed in a little different direction, and maybe they would have been a little safer. Viewing at Powers Funeral Home from 9am - 5pm Sun. to Wed., service at Immanuel Lutheran Church Wed, 12/19/2007 at 1pm.
