    CROSS, Kenneth Ray — Age 75, of Glide, Oregon, passed away on March 11, 2004, after a lengthy illness. He was born on March 18, 1928, to Ray and Ellen (Ahrens) Cross. On July 14, 1973, he married Jean Talcott at the Messing homestead cabin on Susan Creek. Ken is survived by his wife of 30 years Jean. Also surviving are his children, Erich Cross, of Dayton, Oregon; Tamara Oelrich of Mcminnville, Oregon; and Bruce Cross of Roanoke, Virginia; stepchildren who affectionately call him Pops, Poppi, or Papa Ken-Susan Talcott and Bill Talcott both of Glide; Melissa Otto of Roseburg and Cynthia Medlar of Loomis, California. Ken and Jean have 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Ken’s family was very special to him. He was a Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater on three different ships from 1946 to 1948. He then went into business with his dad and brother, Norman in Thompson Falls, Montana. Ken attended the University of Idaho and Washington State College, majoring in agriculture. He worked in the Feed and Garden Supply business and for Centennial Mills, a flour and feed manufacturer where he was assistant production coordinator and credit manager for 16 years. Ken then bought and managed a Western Auto store in Sequim, Washington. Later he worked in accounting, for Buchanan Cellars Grain in McMinnville, Oregon. He moved to Roseburg in 1972 and was employed by the Oregon Department of Transportation from 1972 to 1995, as a weighmaster. In retirement he enjoyed working on the “Cross Patch” on Little River and helping others with chores and projects they were unable to do. He was a very considerate and caring man. Ken was a born again Christian and a member of the Glide Baptist Church. He looked forward to going to be with the Lord. At his request he was cremated. A memorial service will be held at Glide Baptist Church at 11:30 a.m. on April 3, 2004. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glide Baptist Church building fund, a program that was dear to his heart.

  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the POPKEN, Michael Thomas - Age 46, of Corvallis, Oregon, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at his home. He was born Nov. 8, 1955, and raised in the Roseburg area where he attended the Winston-Dillard school system. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1973 and went on to attend Lane Community College and Umpqua Community College where he received a degree in engineering. In June of 1977 Mike married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Brown. In 1978 they moved to Corvallis and Mike began a career with CH2M Hill, where he remained a loyal employee for 24 years. They had two sons, Dustin and Nicholas. As a family they enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, boating, rafting, fishing, as well as water skiing and snow skiing. The Popken family and their close friends were on an endless pursuit for glassy water, fluffy powder and that trophy fish. Mike made many friends, most of which resulted in life-long friendships. Survivors include his mother, Wanda Popken of Winston, Ore., wife, Cheryl, sons, Dustin of Eugene, and Nicholas of Corvallis, brother, David of Houston, Texas, sister, Pam of Dayton, Mont. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother. At Mike's request a celebration of life will take place on August 3, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Willamette Park in Corvallis.
