'Ramblings of the News-Review Man by Paul Jenkins'

Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Cannon, whose home is on the Buckhorn road to Glide, have the strangest ideas concerning work. I have always operated on the theory that work was something to dodge, if one could, like smallpox, or a broken leg; something to leave strictly alone, if possible. But they believe one needs to work to be happy, and contented - and healthy.
They both were practicing their theory when I called on them recently. Mrs. Cannon was working in her flower garden, and supervising the activities of a chicken whose leg she had set not long ago. Just before I arrived she had chopped off a big limb from an apple tree, doing a most workman-like job of it. She must handle an axe like a veteran, when she needs to. She is eighty years old, but doesn't look it - far from it! Nor act it, either.
Dick was up a canyon, riving out some shakes and making cedar posts. The ringing of his hammer upon the wedge guided me to him through thetimber. The blows came quick and fast, just like a young man was hold ofthe handle, and so one was. Dick Cannon is only eighty-six years old -still in his prime, I should say, after taking a look at all the piles ofwood, and shakes, and posts which were lying about.
No wonder this country was changed almost overnight from a wildernessto a community of farms, when such pioneers forged the way! Both of the Cannons crossed the plains with their parents in the very early fifties, soon settling in Douglas county near their present home. Mrs. Cannon was a Chapman, and her early home was where Willard Smith lives today. Mr.Cannon's father settled on Oak creek near Franklin Barker's place. Mr.Cannon and his wife have lived at their present home for over sixtyyears, I believe.
After all, the folks who have the will to work - and the health toenable them to - are the fortunate ones. It must be so, for they growold so gracefully.
