  • Married Name: As of 1941,her married name was Richards.
  • Note*: She a genealogist who corresponded with cousins to learn more about the Kent family.
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Sidney Lord Richards, age 90, passed away May 10, 2005, in Austin, Texas. Born October 25, 1914, in Kerrville, Texas, daughter of Hodge Pleasant Lord and Sarah Robinson Lord of Cheapside, Tex. She was a long time resident of Springfield, Virginia and later, Austin, Texas. A child of a ranching family, she lived her early Texas life near towns such as McCoy, Pleasanton, Nixon, Millett and San Antonio. She lived briefly in Houston graduating from Central High School. Although a South Texas girl at heart, her roots were adorned with an abundance of history as disclosed in her many genealogical writings and her published articles, a hobby lasting sixty years. Her early ancestors, from Saffron-Walden, England, settled in Virginia in the early 1700's. Sidney was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and worked in their headquarters in Washington, D.C. Her more immediate ancestors were early pioneers in the Lone Star State when it was a Republic. On March 6, 1836, her descendent, Andrew Kent, died in the Battle of the Alamo. Sidney's heritage enabled her to become a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (Alamo Mission Chapter) and a member of the Alamo Defenders Descendants Association. She is a direct descendent of George Lord, volunteer soldier, First Brigade of the Texas Militia, captured December 26, 1842, by the Mexican Army at the Battle of Mier. Later, as a prisoner, he drew the "white bean" which ultimately saved his life. Those drawing the black bean were summarily executed. In 1941 Sidney married Lt. Edmund B. Richards of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Thirty years of military assignments took them to places such as Bogota, Columbia; Evreux, France; the Pentagon; Travis AFB, California before retiring to Springfield, Virginia. Her career began as a legal secretary in San Antonio and during WWII worked at The Presidio in San Francisco awaiting her husband's return from bombing missions in the Pacific. During the 1970's, Sidney worked in The White House for the Nixon Administration and later, in the Pentagon for the Dept. of the Air Force before retiring at the age of 65. She is survived by her son, Edmund B. "Sonny" Richards, wife Kendyl and their daughters, Paige and Courtney; and son, Timothy M. Richards, his daughter, Carrie Moorehead; and daughter, Merrill Hill, husband Dennis and children, Matthew and Mallory. She is, also, survived by her brother Hodge Edward Lord of Sabinal, Texas and many nieces and nephews of her siblings. Sidney was predeceased by her husband Colonel Edmund Burke Richards after 47 years of marriage. She is predeceased by her brothers George, Dick, and Charles Lord, and sisters Polly Martin, Tommy Gemmer, Leota Gydeson, and an infant sister, Mary Bell Lord. Many heartfelt thanks and appreciation to her caregiver, Virginia Mendoza, who provided loving and dedicated care to Sidney during her final five years of life and was faithfully by Sidney's side until the end. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX. Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia on June 8, 2005, where she will be buried with her husband. after 10 May 2005.
