  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Jay M. Headrick
    Aug. 10, 1933 - May 9, 2004
Jay M. Headrick, 70, died Sunday.
Jay Marvin Headrick was born in Salem, on Aug. 10, 1933, at the Deaconess Hospital.
Jay attended grade school in Salem before moving to Independence and then to a farm near North Santiam.
He attended Aumsville High School and Cascade High School, where he graduated in 1952.
Jay joined the Navy in 1952 and spent four years serving during the Korean conflict as a Storekeeper 2nd Class and Program Manager at KCMB Armed Forces Radio while stationed at Subic Bay in the Philippines.
While there he was attached to the Armed Forces Radio Network. He had his own show, "Top of the Morning," and was able to travel around the area with USO shows seeing lots of Southeast Asia, the Philippines and Australia.
Jay came home on leave in November 1955, and met his wife-to-be, Myrna Little, on a blind date. After finishing his tour of duty, Jay returned home in June 1956, and Myrna and he were married Dec. 23.
During the next few years Jay attended Oregon College of Education and worked various jobs as a disc jockey, and at Stayton Canning Company. He even owned his own Shell service station.
He taught at Stayton High School and worked part-time at the Stayton Post Office. An opportunity to advance at the post office came up and he worked there until retiring in 1991 as Postmaster of Scio.
During his lifetime, Jay was always active in community organizations. As a high school student, he was a charter member of Tillicum chapter of DeMolay in Independence, serving as Master Councilor of Santiam Chapter after moving to the Stayton area.
This carried on to his adult life as Jay became a Mason and served as Master of Santiam Masonic Lodge No. 25, A.F.& A.M., in 1966.
Upon retiring, he went two steps further and joined Scottish Rite, then became a member of the Shrine, a group whose mission is to provide free medical service to children with orthopedic disorders and burn victims.
As a Shriner, Jay participated in many local parades and attended the Shrine East-West All-Star Football Game each August.
Always interested in sports, Jay played basketball and football in high school. His interest continued as an active and founding member of the Stayton High Booster Club.
He was involved in the construction of the first football stadium, which burned, and for many winning years was the voice of the Stayton Eagles basketball team.
Jay was an avid Trail Blazer and OSU basketball fan, and most nights after work found him at one game or another.
An avid believer in education, Jay served 12 years on the Stayton High School board late in the late 1970's and 1980's, service twice as chairman.
In 2001, the family established the Headrick Educational Scholarship at Stayton High School, awarded to one graduating Stayton High School senior who has elected to attend an Oregon public university and pursue a degree in teaching.
During this time he was active in many local civic groups as well. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Stayton, and a member of the Stayton Lions Club since 1966.
When he was unable to attend the Stayton meetings, he joined the rowdy group in Scio for eight years and served as their president.
After Jay returned to the Stayton Lions Club he was named "Lion of the Year" in 1995 and chosen as a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1998.
Although he retired in 1991, Jay stayed as busy as ever. He had a holiday business as a "Rent-A'Sant," making home visits on Christmas Eve and serving as the Santa-in-residence at Heritage Mall in Albany for many years.
Jay was an avid RVer, and spent many years traveling locally and throughout the country. The family has a retreat at Camp Sherman and Jay loved to spend as much time there as possible.
He and his wife, Myrna, also liked to escape the rain during the winter by vacationing in Yuma, Ariz.
In 1998, he was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx. Successful surgery left him without cancer, and without a voice. In 2001, he was found to have PSP, Progressive Supernuclear Palsey, a degenerative movement disorder.
For Jay these new realities were frustrating but he always thrived as a communicator, and managed to get his message across through silent mouthed words and written notes, but the really serious communication was found in his alert eyes and ready smile.
Jay is survived by his wife of 47 years, Myrna of Stayton; his daughter and her husband, Michelle and Michael Fowler of Salem; brother and sister-in-law George and Patricia Headrick of Brookfield, Wis; sister-in-law Gwendolyn (Lockner) Headrick; niece and nephew-in-law, Alida and Qua Lee of Salem; and nephews David Headrick of Chicago, Ill., and Christopher Headrick of Los Angeles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Frizzell Headrick and Alida Beryl (Olsen) Headrick, and younger brother Bruce Allen Headrick.
A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Stayton First United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Al Kader Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund or Stayton First United Methodist Church Building Fund. Weddle Funderal Home in Stayton is handling arrangements.
