It's uncertain when U.S. soldiers will come home from Iraq and Afghanistan from combat missions.
But a Prineville man is trying to make their lives overseas a little bit easier.
Roy Rogers Reynvaan, a retired ranch hand, has been busy collecting and making patriotic items for families who have relatives serving overseas.
Reynvaan, a deeply religious man, has had the experience of his ministry coming back to him in the form of thank-yous and hugs from families of those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"It started with one of these," Reynvaan said, holding a horseshoe that has feathers and a 9/11 magnet attached. "I make a patriotic horseshoe. The nine beads represent the nine Native American Christian tribes. Before you could put a feather in a horse's mane, you have to earn this feather."
Reynvaan tells the story from two years ago when he had attended the Paulina Rodeo. The "National Anthem" was sung and a prayer was given. He noticed a woman who was crying during the ceremony.
"And she said she was worried because her grandson was in Iraq," he recalled, adding that he gave her one of the special horseshoes during the rodeo.
She later sent the horseshoe to her grandson.
Back in 2006, he was driving out Lamonta and saw a calf in a pasture that had one of the large yellow Les Schwab tire bags in its throat. He stopped and tried to catch the calf to get the bag out, telling the couple he could help.
"And the lady said `Roy, don't you recognize me?'" he said, adding that the ministry he provides comes back to him.
"You were the one who gave me the horseshoe and so I want to give you a hug.'"
Reynvaan wants to honor those who are serving the country.
"It's like you and I can walk up and down this street," he said. "I like Big Mac hamburgers and going to the church of my choice. You know what I mean? It's because we're free."
"The Bible specifically states this," he said. "There's no greater gift than to specifically give your life for another. And in God's eyes, we're all brothers and sisters."
He got the magnets at Fair Feed Farms. One magnet shows the smoke and debris coming from the World Trade Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, and an image of God's hands coming down in a protective stance. Above that reads the statement "In God's hands."
"I put a patriotic horse shoe, a Teddy Bear and a patriotic baseball cap in each box," said the retired ranch hand. Then he goes store to store for donations.
He also heard from a woman who was in Erickson's Thriftway who had a son serving in Iraq. Reynvaan had helped her and her family move back in about 1997. The retiree recalled that she said, "Roy, guess what? My son is no longer in Iraq. He's in Hawaii."
He added that the soldiers typically give the Teddy Bears out to Iraqi children.
Reynvaan has been helping out veterans for 32 years, adding that he used to give them a thank-you card. Now he provides them with the Native American arts and crafts that he makes.
"I don't ship any of them," he said of the boxes, which he gets from Prineville Men's Wear owner Jim Lane. "They go to the parents and the parents ship them."
"Without Jimmy Lane I wouldn't be able to do it. They are Justin boot boxes," Reynvaan said, adding that he gets horseshoes from Ochoco Feed and from Fair Feed Farm.
Pointing to a box at his home, he said, "After that box gets filled right there, it'll be 36 boxes."
He's also open to providing the gift boxes to families who have servicemen and women serving in other military bases around the world.
"Anybody that I come in contact with, I give them to," he said. "Anybody."
He has had plenty of thank-yous from those who have served overseas and added, "I got a picture and thank-you card from the President of the United States."
"I'm patriotic." he said. "Big time. I've got an old plow. It's painted red, white and blue."
So as Thanksgiving approaches and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, Reynvaan will continue filling each box with a horseshoe, baseball cap and a Teddy Bear.
