James Gilmore

  • Biography*: He James Gilmore was born July 15, 1791 in Mercer County, Ky. His wife Mary (Poteete) Gilmore was born Nov. 4, 1793 in Virginia. They were married July 10, 1814. They had 13 children.
    In 1852 they bought the family by wagon train to Oregon from Holt county, Mo. Their eldest son Samuel had come with the Applegate train in 1843. One daughter, Josephine died of cholera on the plains at age 14. They homesteaded where the city of Roseburg is located. At that time there was only a trading post.
    Their son Samuel was a member of the first elected law-making body of Oregon in 1844. In 1878 he was a delegate-at-large to the first Washington Territorial Constitutional Convention.
    The ninth child, James P. Gilmore was born April 18, 1830 in Clay county, Mo. His wife Nancy (Barnes) Gilmore was born Nov. 4, 1832 in Indiana. They were married Dec. 21, 1851 in Andrew County, Mo. and came to Oregon with his parents, arriving in Douglas County Oct. 14, 1852, where they took up a homestead. Their 13 children were born there. Several were lost during an epidemic of diphtheria.
    In 1885, James and Nancy, with their family, moved to the Washington Territory and homesteaded on Crofton Prairie near Goldendale. James died July 4, 1903 and Nancy on Feb. 18, 1915. Both are buried in the Goldendale cemetery.
    Their son, M.P. (Mat) Gilmore was born in Roseburg, Ore., March 29, 1874 and came with his parents to Crofton Prairie at age 11. He later became engaged in the sheep business, moving to the Rock Creek Ranch east of Goldendale.
    Mat and Anna Wellenbrock were married in Lewiston, Idaho in 1912. they had two children, M.P. Gilmore Jr. and Bertha (Gilmore) Babcock. Both were born in Glenwood.
    Mat Gilmore died Aug. 23, 1936 and was buried in Goldendale. Following Mat's death Anna married Roy Avery of Goldendale. Widowed again, she married Archie Carlock of White Salmon. She died in 1979. His son Mat resides in Portland and daughter Bertha in Glenwood.
    He lived to know only one grandchild, Larry Babcock now of Goldendale.
    Mat Jr. has three children: Captain Michael L. Gilmore, manager of tow boat operation on the Panama Canal; Patricia Sawyer of Anchorage, Alaska and Cleo Herring of Albany, Ore. -- Bertha Babcock
