Perry Cornelius "Nealy" Helms

M, b. 9 December 1876, d. 26 March 1955
  • Biography*: He PERRY C. AND LUCY E. HELMS
Perry Cornelius Helms was one of five sons born to Anthony and Mary J. Helms who lived at Waldron, near Richmond, Oregon. Perry was born December 9, 1876. Perry’s brothers were Walter E., Charles A., James and Otis V.
Perry’s father, Anthony, was born in Missouri in 1842. He enlisted in the Civil War and served until 1865. Shortly after his discharge he married and came to Oregon, ranching at Waldron and Twickenham 26 years. He established the Waldron and Twickenham post offices. Anthony then moved to Mitchell, Oregon where he was editor and owner of the Mitchell Sentinel until his death in 1923.
Nealy, as Perry was called by his friends, spent his entire life in Wheeler County. While working at the Prairie Ranch for Gilman and French Land and Stock Co., he met and married Lucy Cox, July 1905. Lucy and her sister, Edith Snyder, were employed at the ranch.
Lucy Ellen Cox was born at Palouse City, Washington, August 22, 1885 to James and Estella Cox. Lucy had five brothers and three sisters. One brother, Howard Cox is living in Cottage Grove. The Cox family moved to Oregon when Lucy was one year old. They lived in several places in Crook County and the Willamette Valley. The father cleared land and built a log cabin on the Crooked River for their first home. In 1903 Lucy Cox came to Fossil to work for Mrs. W.W. Steiwer. While working at the Prairie Ranch in 1905 she met Nealy Helms.
The Helmses rented and owned ranches in the Winlock area, later moving to Fossil where Nealy worked for Robert Roper in the livery stable business. They rented for awhile, then bought a home.
Their first child, Edwin, was born May 18, 1912. He passed away in 1926. Their second child, Silvin (Buster), was born in Fossil, February 21, 1918. He and his wife are retired and living in Medford, Oregon.
Nealy worked for several of the large stock ranches of Wheeler County. He enjoyed being around stock and especially riding his saddle horses. One year Fred Ball and Nealy bought horses and took them to Idaho for the winter. Due to the frigid cold--minus 36 degrees--and deep snow, the men lost the entire herd.
During these years Lucy maintained the home in Fossil except for the times she joined her husband on the ranches he worked. She kept busy with sewing, tatting, crocheting and cake decorating. Scarcely a family in Fossil failed to call on Lucy to decorate a birthday, wedding or anniversary cake. She has been a faithful member of the First Baptist Church for many years.
Perry (Nealy) passed away March 1955. Lucy then sold her home, moved to California and bought a mobile home to be near her son Silvin. She soon became homesick for Fossil friends and moved her mobile home to Fossil in 1957. She lived alone in Fossil until the fall of 1981, when she decided it was best to move to Medford, Oregon and make her home with her son and daughter-in-law. At this writing, December 1982, Lucy Helms is 97 years of age.
