  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Eva Julia Meye February 18, 1910 - March 30, 2006
SILVERTON - Eva was born in Silverton, Oregon on February 18, 1910, and lived virtually her entire life in the North Howell area of Silverton. At 96 she was the oldest surviving member of a pioneering farm community, once well populated with families whose related immigrant parents had come to the USA at the turn of the century from what is now western Romania. She married Robert Carl Meye on June 14, 1928. A few years later they built their lifetime farm home at (what is now) 8782 Labish Center Road Northeast. After many years of very hard work on the farm, while simultaneously working a couple decades on the nearby Hayes ranch, they had turned what was originally an oak forest into a very productive berry farm, with a succession of berry crops--strawberries, youngberries, boysenberries, black raspberries, and evergreen blackberries. In the Forties they purchased a parcel of "beaverdam" from the Hayes Ranch and also grew onions for many years. Ultimately, the home farm was planted into hazelnuts, and has been managed by Eva's grandson John Meye. Eva was a very sturdy person who was fully involved in all these farming ventures. Her enduring strength was well demonstrated in the manner in which she continued to work on the farm as a single woman for three decades following the death of her beloved husband at Christmas in 1975. Eva labored long and hard as a housewife and farmwife; but more than that, for her whole life, she labored faithfully in the service of her Lord. She taught the primary Sunday school at the North Howell Community Church for virtually her entire adult life; she was the first Christian educator for a long and large parade of the community's children. With a limited background of musical instruction to support her, she served the church reluctantly (but gladly) as its pianist for many years. (Her grandson John, a skilled musician, who entertained his grandmother at the piano daily during the final years of her life, will play hymns and songs that his grandmother loved before and during her memorial service.) Eva was also active with her husband Robert in the work of the Gideon organization and the Union Gospel Mission of Salem. Her Christian service was solidly built on a life in prayer and bible study, and fellowship with other believers. She and her husband were very generous givers of their means and of themselves, and brought needy people to the farm and into their home to help them through hard times. They were also quick to minister to the aged and the infirm.
In the days when spelling was especially counted as a measure of brightness, Eva won the silver and then the gold medal in the Marion County spelling competitions. She maintained that skill until the last days of her life-and even delighted in spelling words backwards! Her family thought that Eva was both bright and beautiful! Eva loved gardening and flowers and all forms of natural beauty, and transmitted this love to her son Bob, who used it to become a professional gardener-landscaper during five years of graduate study. She and her husband loved to travel, and to fish-and loved to do nothing more than to lay aside farm work and take their grandchildren on a fishing trip to the Santiam River or to the ocean. Eva is survived by her son Dr.Robert P. Meye of Altadena, California. Her second child, daughter Virginia, died as an infant, and her second daughter Arletha died at age 37. Six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren also survive her. Five of her twelve brothers and sisters are still living: Mary Lou Leovy of Hermosa Beach, California; Ann Sproed, Joseph Pfau, and Thomas Pfau, all Salem residents; and Paul Pfau of Glen Ellen, California. Contributions may be made to the Gideons or the Union Gospel Mission.
Visitation will be held at the Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton, Oregon (229 Mill Street) on Sunday afternoon, April 9, from 12-6 p.m.--family present 4-6 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the Country Wedding Chapel (former location of the North Howell Community Church), 9171 Nusom Road at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 10. A private graveside service will be held at Bethany Cemetery in Silverton.

    September 25, 1911 - February 15, 2007
Born in Gervais in Oregon's Willamette Valley, Mary Lou Pfau grew up on her parents' farm with twelve brothers and sisters. As a young woman she moved to California to study at the Southern California Bible College in Pasadena with the intent to become a missionary, but moved to Hermosa Beach in 1935 to care for the two small sons of James Leovy whose wife had recently died. She married James in 1959, was widowed in 1980, and has lived almost continuously in her home in Hermosa since 1935. Mary Lou had a deep faith in God, a love of people, especially children, and the beauty of nature around her, particularly the ocean at her front door. She was renowned for her roses and her orchids, but, most of all, she was known for her joy in living, her gentle kindness, and her faith. She leaves beloved stepsons, James Leovy, Jr. and Conway; grandchildren, Joanne, Katie, Steven, John, Jill, and Suzanne; brothers, Tom, Joe, and Paul; sister, Ann; seven great-grandchildren; and beloved nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 3, 2007 at St. Cross Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Los Angeles Childrens Hospital or the Samaritan's Purse. September 29, 1918 - June 25, 2012

Joseph Pfau, a generous man known for his faith and strong family ties passed away June 25, 2012. He was born to Hungarian immigrants parents, Anton and Eva Pfau in North Howell, Oregon.

He graduated from Willamette University in business, with a love of accounting. He joined several of his brothers and sisters in purchasing farms that adjoined the original family farm where he grew onions and berries to support his wife and four children but maintained a large orchard and garden so that he could give excess to friends and those less fortunate. He did not abandon his accounting skills but maintained immaculate accounting registers for business and prepared tax records during the winter months.

He was a private and humble man but passionately defended and argued his strong faith-based beliefs. He enjoyed collecting and fixing clocks and was never too busy to help others. A few years after the passing of Arlene, his wife of 60 years, he was fortunate to spend seven years married to Pansy, a dedicated and wonderful companion that made his golden years very enjoyable.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to World Missions in care of Peoples Church. Graveside service is Monday, July 2nd for family at Bethany Cemetery followed by Memorial Services at 11:30 at People Church. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors www.HED-Fh.com on Sunday, 1 July 2012 Salem, Marion County, Oregon.
