A family memorial service is planned for January 2006, in memory of former McMinnville resident, Richard A. Middleton. Mr. Middleton died of natural causes related to diabetes Dec. 10th, 2005 at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, where he had resided since 2004. Per his request, the disposition was by cremation, facilitated by Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel. He was 67.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Nov. 16th, 1938, he was the son of Burgess F. and Allie O. Middleton. Richard was raised in Fresno, California, and McMinnville, Oregon where he graduated from McMinnville High School, and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Before being stationed in Waco, Texas, he married McMinnville resident, Ardelle Tatom in 1955. From Waco, he was transferred to Biloxi Mississippi. During his years of service, he played trombone with the Air Force marching band. After his discharge form the Air Force in 1959, he returned to Oregon, and attended the University of Oregon, where he studied broadcasting and the violin. While attending classes, he did internships at radio stations, KFLY and KLOO in Corvallis, Oregon, which would become the beginning of a career in radio.
From 1960-1995, Richard adopted the radio alias "Dick Sainte," and became legendary in the radio industry. During his career he was all, or part of many #1 radio shows at stations including: KISN, KEX, and KWJJ - Portland, OR; KGB - San Diego, CA; KFRC - San Francisco, CA; KRLA - Los Angeles, CA; WLS, and WCFL - Chicago, IL. Most of his career was in radio broadcasting, but he also held positions as Program Director, and as Station Manager. In the 70's he was named #1 Disc Jockey of California, by the California Disc Jockey Association. His vast collection of photos with musical celebrities spans all forms of music from pop, jazz, country, and his favorite, classical. He lived and loved music, and was a virtual encyclopedia on music history. His career always followed a musical background. He toured briefly with the legendary "Les Brown" band as a trombonist. He also formed his own brass jazz band, which performed in clubs and as show openers for many well-known brass bands. He received a gold album for his contributions in producing a million selling album for the group "Chicago." Before he retired he had been involved in teaching/mentoring, radio broadcasting at the University of Oregon, and at PCC, where he also directed the campus radio program. He briefly studied auctioneering, and was pursuing it as a hobby, before becoming ill.
As a hobby he enjoyed acting, and had performed in several live plays, including a Gallery performance in the "Death Trap." He was a lifelong member of the Screen Actors Guild. He was a gourmet cook, enjoyed NASCAR, and NFL football, especially when he could root for the San Francisco 49ers. He loved animals, especially his Collie, Lady.
In 1995, he lived out his dream of retiring to the Oregon coast, where he relaxed fishing, and wave watching. The Frank Sinatra song titled "I did it my way" is a fitting tribute to his life, and interests.
He is survived by 6 children: Debbie Story of Amity, Oregon, Lennette Fournier of Sherwood, Oregon. Richard Middleton Jr. of McMinnville, Oregon, Randy Middleton of Portland, Oregon, Tanya Regan of San Francisco, California, and R. Tyler Middleton. He has 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
