Brian Scott Ditchen

M, b. 19 September 1975, d. 28 March 2004
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Brian Scott Ditchen
    September 19, 1975 - March 28, 2004
SALEM - Brian was born in Salem, Ore. on September 19, 1975 to David and Wilma Ditchen. He passed away on March 28, 2004 in an airplane accident on Three Fingered Jack Mountain. He attended North Howell Elementary School and Salem Academy for middle school and high school. In high school he excelled in academics and in sports. He played football, baseball, and he wrestled. He was team captain for the football team. He was a two-year conference All-Star, team MVP, defensive player of the year, and he also played in the Shriner East-West All-Star Game. He was in the academic Honor Society and on the honor roll numerous times. After high school, he pursued his degree in Agriculture, attending both Eastern Oregon State and Oregon State University, where he obtained his Bachelors of Science in Agriculture Business Management. Following graduation from college, he began farming as the fourth generation on the family farm in Silverton with his father, David and uncle, Eldon. His twin brothers, Darrin and Duane followed two years later. Brian loved working hard with his family every day. In addition to his hard work on the farm, he somehow found time to pursue his real passions of flying, hiking, mountain biking, water skiing, snowboarding, and just about any other outdoor activity, including four elk and deer hunting trips to Montana (“Bull Country”). Much of the time those activities involved his best friend, Trent Taylor.

Even though Brian was on the go, he always found time to be involved in his church, Christian Center of Salem, in which he ushered, and was a part of the Life Net Group, and Royal Rangers. Brian’s real strength, confidence, and love for life came from his strong faith in his Lord Jesus Christ. With that strong love for his Lord he took up the job of spreading God’s good word and love across the world by going on mission trips which included two “work and witness” mission trips to the Philippines, where he helped to build a dormitory at a Nazarene Christian College, and another mission trip was to Fiji, where he helped to remodel a church.

Brian was giving, Christlike, soft-spoken, a deep-thinker, caring, loving, easy-going, and a leader. He was also a good listener, smart, creative, and a prankster.

He is survived by his father and mother, David and Wilma Ditchen of Silverton; by his two brothers and their wives and family, Duane and Shauna Ditchen of Silverton and Darrin and Angela Ditchen and their son, Dylan Scott Ditchen of Hermiston; by his grandmothers, Muriel Ditchen and Fern Narin, both of Salem; by his 10 cousin’s, 6 aunts, 6 uncles, and a very large extended family. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Kevin David Ditchen; by his grandfather, Carl Ditchen; and his grandfather, Denvis Garland.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, 1350 Commercial St. S.E., Salem. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 4, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Christian Center of Salem, 1850 45th Ave. N.E. Interment will be at Bethany Cemetery in Silverton. Contributions may be made to Christian Center of Salem in support of the Youth Mexico Mission Trip or to Corvallis and Jefferson County Search and Rescue Teams.
